New to the Matrix grid? Here are the basics before you jack in.
What is Matrix?
Matrix is an open standard for decentralized, real-time communication. Instead of one company owning the whole network, many independent servers can talk to each other.
How does Matrix work?
You create an account on a homeserver, for example @you:nightcity.chat. Your homeserver can federate with other Matrix servers, so you can chat with people across the wider network.
Do I need a nightcity.chat account?
No. You can join public rooms from another Matrix server too. Matrix is federated, so you are not locked into one provider.
Which apps can I use?
You can use Matrix with different clients. We recommend Cinny for the web, but Element, Commet, FluffyChat, SchildiChat and Nheko are also popular choices depending on your device and taste.
Is Matrix encrypted?
Matrix supports end-to-end encryption. In encrypted rooms, messages are encrypted on your device and can only be read by the intended participants.
What are rooms and spaces?
Rooms are where conversations happen. Spaces are collections of rooms, kind of like a district map for a community. Our NCC Space helps you find the official public rooms.
Can I talk to people on other servers?
Yes. That is the point of federation. Users from nightcity.chat can communicate with users on other Matrix homeservers, as long as federation is allowed between them.
Can Matrix bridge to other platforms?
Matrix can be bridged to other networks like IRC, Discord, Telegram or Mastodon-related communities when bridges are available. Availability depends on what the server operators provide.
